Hands-Free Precision for Close Work
Standard jeweller's loupes require you to hold them awkwardly or squint to keep them in place, while headband magnifiers are heavy and intrusive. Our signature gallery fitting allows the monocle to rest securely and comfortably in the eye socket, giving you completely hands-free magnification. Perfect for intricate tasks where you need both hands steady.
True Magnification vs. Reading Lenses
A standard +2.00D reading lens only provides about 1.5× enlargement at a 50cm distance. Our Precision Magnification range uses high-index optical glass surfaced specifically for close working distances. A 3× precision monocle (equivalent to +8.00D) delivers genuine, distortion-free magnification at a 12.5cm working distance, making it an essential tool for hallmark inspection and micro-assembly.
Professional Optics Meets Classic Style
Why use a cheap plastic loupe when you can use a beautifully crafted optical instrument? Available in Gold, Silver, Black, and Rose Gold, our precision monocles elevate your workspace. They look as good resting on a watchmaker's bench as they do hanging from a tailored waistcoat.
Magnification Monocles
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a precision magnification monocle the same as a reading monocle?
No. Reading monocles are designed for viewing objects at 40-50cm away. Precision magnification monocles use much stronger, high-index lenses (equivalent to +4.00D to +16.00D) designed for examining fine details at very close working distances (6-25cm).
What magnification do I need for watchmaking or jewellery?
For general inspection, hallmarks, and basic watch repair, 3× is the industry standard. For highly intricate work like hairspring adjustments or gemstone grading, 4× or 5× is recommended. Remember that higher magnification means a closer working distance.
What is the working distance for these lenses?
The working distance decreases as magnification increases. A 2× monocle has a working distance of about 25cm (10"). A 3× is about 12.5cm (5"). A 4× is 8.3cm (3.3"), and a 5× is 6.3cm (2.5").
Can I use this for reading a book?
We do not recommend it. Because the working distance is so close, holding a book 12cm from your face will quickly cause eye strain. For reading, please browse our Custom Prescription Monocle collection instead.
Will it fit my eye securely?
Yes. Just like our reading monocles, the Precision series features our signature gallery rim. This extension rests naturally against the bone of the eye socket, providing a secure, hands-free fit without the need to squint or grip the frame.
